Hot Girl
Dream Jordan

It’s summertime in “Do or Die Bed-Stuy” Brooklyn, and Kate is feeling down in the dumps. Not only is she tired of her raggedy, tomboy image, but she’s also missing her best friend Felicia, who’s away for the summer. Lonely, and not exactly getting along with her new foster mother Lynn, Kate so badly wants to be out and about, twirling pretty, and partying, and maybe catching the attention of her long-time crush, Charles.

Opportunity knocks one hot summer day when fly girl, Naleejah struts her stuff straight up to Kate, and takes a seat. Full of smiles, Naleejah tells Kate that she remembers her from school, but Kate can’t remember ever having such a fabulous chick trying to befriend her. Kate’s suspicion soon turns to trust once Naleejah gives her a much needed makeover.

Now a brand new Kate suddenly has the attention of her dream boy. But is Naleejah checking for him too? Against Kate’s better judgment, she ignores the warning signs, and continues to let Naleejah lead her down a treacherous path. Soon, what seems like a fun and exciting summer ends up being a harsh reality-check. Now Kate must decide how to get back on the right track…or is it too late?

Author Q&A

1. What's the most sentimentally valuable possession you own?
The yellow Snoopy Diary that I’ve had since the second grade. Every so often, I crack open a random page and laugh at my silly, and sometimes revealing entries.

2. What are some nicknames you’ve had in the past? How did you come by them?
My main nickname is “Dee” which is just an abbreviated version of my real name. But at one point, I thought I was headed for rap superstardom and named myself “Dee Dollars”. Unfortunately, my rap career began and ended at the age of fifteen.

3. Besides being an author, what is your fantasy job?
I would love to be a personal shopper. I’m obsessed with shoes and clearance sales, and I always feel a wave of pride when I’m approached in a store by someone who wants my opinion on a potential purchase. I feel especially flattered when I’m asked on a day that I’m not exactly dressed stylishly; it’s as if they sense my fashion taste hidden under a ball cap and baggy jeans.

4. What music, food or drink do you keep by your side when writing?
Since I write mostly at night, I keep a mug of hot Lipton tea with a touch of carnation milk and three teaspoons of sugar by my side, which helps keep me alert and soothes me at the same time. No music needed. Just the silence of the night.

5. What do you enjoy doing most with your free time?
I love reading nineteenth century literature written by obscure authors, authors so obscure that I don’t remember any names offhand. I enjoy reading about true-to-life characters from a different time, where man-made distractions and avoidances were nonexistent. No such thing as caller id back then. Characters had to face their antagonists head on.
